New year Resolutions

New years. New years is a day for all people to celebrate and relax. For most, the sound of fireworks and the chill of the December air is something they wait for year round. And, a common practice for this holiday is something called “New Year’s Resolutions” where people write down what they wish to accomplish in the new year, and share with friends and family. Not to mention the parties that occur that very night. That, along with the ball drop is what a lot of people look forward to.

The most important question is this: What IS a New Year’s Resolution? A New Year’s resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western World but also found in the Eastern World, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life at the start of a new year. People who attempt to resolve these issues tend to write them down, maybe hang them up somewhere they will see everyday. Common examples of resolutions are as follows: Lose weight, stop smoking, focus on a passion, stop gossiping, make good grades, and be kinder. All of those and more are examples of resolutions.

This isn’t the only practice available for new years. In Spain, people eat grapes from a glass every time the clock rings. In Denmark, people smash plates- and in Japan they ring bells almost 108 times to signify the new year. Other countries have other traditions, yet we all celebrate for the same reason. To become our best selves.
